CASE STUDY · FULL CUSTOM DEVELOPMENT

Custom Logo-Shaped Sunglasses Developed From a Client Drawing

A Japanese customer supplied an original design in which the logo needed to become part of the frame itself. DOMI developed the PC frame through two drawing revisions, a physical 3D prototype, new tooling and molded-sample approval before producing 10,000 pairs.

Project details are published with the customer’s permission. The customer name is omitted because it has not been supplied for publication.

REAL PROJECT · CUSTOM MOLD DEVELOPMENT

A Full-Custom Sunglasses Project for a Japanese Client

A Japanese customer asked DOMI to develop a new PC sunglasses frame in which the logo became part of the shape itself. The first order was approximately 10,000 pairs and took about two months from drawing approval to completed production. The customer has reordered every year.

Client Objective

Turn the logo into the product

The Requirement: The customer supplied artwork for a completely new sunglasses shape. The logo was not intended as a surface print or a small temple decoration; it needed to be built directly into the frame design.

What Success Looks Like: The finished sunglasses had to stay true to the customer’s visual concept while working as a practical molded product. The logo shape, frame structure and overall proportions needed to read as one design.

Development Challenge

A good drawing is not yet a production-ready frame

The Risk: Artwork can look correct on screen but still create problems during tooling or injection molding. When a logo becomes part of the frame, small changes in thickness, connection points or proportions can noticeably alter the result.

How We Handled It: Our sales team discussed the structure with the customer and completed two rounds of drawing revisions. DOMI sent the final production drawing for approval before any mold was made.

Prototype and Tooling Approval

Confirm the shape, then commit to the mold

The Prototype: After the final drawing was approved, DOMI produced a physical 3D prototype and sent it to Japan. The purpose of this stage was to confirm the frame shape as a real object rather than relying only on a digital rendering.

The Decision Point: DOMI began making the production mold only after the customer received and approved the prototype. This reduced the risk of discovering a design problem after tooling had already started.

Tooling, Sampling and Production

Approve the molded sample before bulk production

The Production Sample: Once the mold was completed, DOMI ran a PC injection-molded sample using the actual tooling and sent it to the customer for review. This was the first sample made through the intended production process.

The Approval Process: Bulk production began only after the customer approved the molded sample. The finished order then underwent an independent third-party inspection, including checks for injection-molding flash on the frame and the clarity of the printed graphics.

COMPLETED ORDER

10,000 pairs delivered, followed by annual repeat orders

The initial project took about two months from drawing approval to completed production. Because the mold and approved specifications are already established, annual repeat orders can normally be completed in about 20–30 days, subject to the confirmed order schedule and requirements.

The customer has approved publication of the supplied project information and case images. The mold-storage photograph shows DOMI’s tooling facility rather than the client-specific production mold.

CASE STUDY QUESTIONS

What Buyers Can Learn From This Project

What made this a full-custom sunglasses project?

The logo was part of the frame structure rather than a surface decoration. DOMI therefore needed to review the design for production, prepare a physical prototype, make new tooling and approve a molded sample before bulk production.

Did DOMI start tooling from the customer’s first drawing?

No. The sales and development teams completed two rounds of drawing revisions and then produced a physical 3D prototype. Tooling began only after the customer approved the frame shape shown by the prototype.

Can a logo become part of the sunglasses frame?

A logo or graphic element can be evaluated as part of a new frame design. This normally requires a full-custom route because the artwork must be converted into a structure suitable for tooling and injection molding.

Why produce a physical 3D prototype before making the mold?

A physical prototype allows the buyer to review the shape and proportions before committing to production tooling. The exact prototype method and approval process are confirmed for each project.

Can the order be inspected by a third party?

Yes. This order underwent independent third-party inspection. Checks included whether the injection-molded frames had visible flash and whether the printed graphics were clear. The exact inspection scope and sampling standard should be confirmed for each order.

How long did the first order and repeat orders take?

The initial 10,000-pair project took about two months from drawing approval to completed production because it included prototyping, new tooling and molded-sample approval. With the mold and specifications already established, repeat orders can normally be completed in about 20–30 days, subject to the order schedule.
